Hume Weir Circuit Footage From the 70s

I feel 40 years younger all of a sudden. I’ve just seen some wonderful footage posted on Youtube of a club sprint meeting at the old Hume Weir circuit near Albury and it took me right back to the day.

Taken on 16mm film in the mid-70s, the home movie includes a couple of laps of in-car ‘race cam’ style footage and more taken from numerous vantage points around the track during an Austin Healey Sprite club day. The grainy quality is more than outweighed by the nostalgic thrill.

Punting my Ford Escort around Hume Weir on club days back then, as in this photo, was a formative experience for me, so discovering this video, originally posted in 2011, was like being transported in time. The 1 mile Hume Weir circuit was demanding. The corners seemed to go on and on. It was almost a series of corners connected by more corners.

The circuit operated from 1959 until 1977 and during the 70s I was a member of the Albury & District Car Club, which operated the track and for a time I edited the club newsletter. Top drivers came to race at this little circuit. I recall flag marshalling as Moffat, Jane, Harrop, Thompson, McCormack and the Geoghegans roared past just inches away.

Thanks to LJ Fowler for posting this wonderful movie footage. Click here to check it out.
